Heart send Glory bottom

Perth Glory have crashed to the bottom of the A-League ladder after slipping to a 2-0 away loss to the Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park.

Glory have fallen a long way since last season's 2-1 grand final loss to Brisbane Roar, and Saturday's loss in Melbourne leaves the West Australian club struggling to make the top six.

The Glory sit four points away from a finals spot with two games still to play in the round.

However, the Glory's slide down the table has pushed the Heart into finals contention, with victory pushing the Melbourne club up into fifth spot on 24 points.

The Heart created the better opportunities in the first half and were duly rewarded as Nick Kalmar's delightful free-kick caught the underside of the bar and flew beyond the despairing dive of Glory 'keeper Danny Vukovic.

Perth pushed further up the field in the second half and looked likely to break their scoring drought and pull level, but the Heart's young striker, Eli Babalj, who only recently returned from his failed move to Red Star Belgrade, struck the killer blow in the 56th minute.

Western Sydney Wanderers moved up to second place in the A-League standings with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle Jets.

Taking full advantage of the Melbourne Victory's 1-0 loss away to Adelaide United the previous day, the Wanderers scored late in either half to remain four points off the summit following the Central Coast Mariners' 5-0 thrashing of Wellington Phoenix on Thursday.

It was a fifth straight win for the Wanderers, and came courtesy of goals from Youssouf Hersi and Mark Bridge.

Hersi got his third goal in two games on the stroke of half-time, stabbing home Shinji Ono's free-kick, and Bridge doubled the lead with a fine solo effort in the 84th minute, running from almost the halfway line before firing home.

Newcastle captain Ruben Zadkovich got one back in injury time but the points belonged to Western Sydney.
