Victory coach says Adelaide won ugly

Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou concedes beauty is the eye of the beholder, but says Adelaide United's assault was just plain ugly.

Adelaide justified their brutal approach in Friday night's A-League fixture with the result: a 1-0 home win against their arch rivals.

Postecoglou says it's not his position to pass judgment on the Reds' overtly physical tactics, but made clear the crash and bash isn't a style he likes.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," Postecoglou said.

"I just don't think it was a great game.

"That is just me, other people will say it was fantastic.

"It wasn't anything I could really get excited about ... it was just a disruptive game.

"It's not how I like my football served.

"I might be a minority in that and that is fine - Adelaide won and good luck to them."

Five Adelaide players were given yellow cards in the initial 40 minutes and Reds coach Michael Valkanis was expelled for abusing referees.

Caretaker coach Valkanis was marched from the sidelines in the 42nd minute and was inside the tunnel when Adelaide striker Jeronimo Neumann scored the match winner.

"It was fantastic to hear the Adelaide United crowd - I didn't know who scored and I didn't care, I knew we were one-nil up," he said.

Valkanis watched the rest of the match from the grandstand, unrepentant about being expelled.

"It's the passionate side of me, I don't think it's going to change ... I just had a go at one of the decisions and off I went," he said.

Valkanis, appointed interim coach when John Kosmina suddenly quit last month, described Adelaide's physical approach as ideal, as it helped break their three-game losing sequence.

"I really wanted the players to show that passion and aggression to want to win the game," he said.

"We have to play like every game is a final, if we are going to be prepared for finals."

The win took Adelaide to just one point behind the second-placed Victory.
