Drogba treated to hero's welcome by Gala

Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba was greeted by hordes of Galatasary supporters as he arrived in Istanbul hoping to complete a transfer from Shanghai Shenhua.

• Cox: Sneijder and Drogba intrigue

Drogba, 34, agreed terms with Gala in January but the move has yet to be ratified as Chinese club Shenhua claim the former Chelsea striker is still under contract with them and are refusing to allow him to leave.

The hold-up over the deal has not stopped Drogba travelling to Istanbul, however, and hundreds of fans were waiting at the airport to welcome him to Turkey from South Africa, where he had been competing at the African Nations Cup.

"I'm very happy to be here for me as it's a new adventure, a new part of my life,'' Drogba told Galatasaray's official website. "I will do my best to be successful for the club.''

Drogba is expected to sign an 18-month deal with Galatasaray, who added another high-profile name to their ranks in January with the capture of Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan.
