Five withdraw from Germany squad

Germany boss Joachim Low will be without five key players when Germany take on France in a friendly on Wednesday.

• Low proud of Germany style

Five players pulled out of the Germany squad ahead of Wednesday's friendly at the Stade de France in Paris. Borussia Dortmund trio Marcel Schmelzer, Marco Reus and Mario Gotze and Lazio striker Miroslav Klose followed Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who is set to miss his eighth consecutive Germany match, in being ruled out of the match

With four midfielders gone, Low reacted by calling up Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender. Bayern striker Mario Gomez remains the only forward in the Germany squad, with Leverkusen target man Stefan Kiessling not called up for his first Germany match since 2010.

Germany have not beaten France in nearly 26 years, with their last success dating back to August 1987 when a Rudi Voller brace secured a 2-1 win over France at Berlin's Olympiastadion. At that time, the city was still divided by the Berlin Wall.

"Records are there to be broken," Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff told a press conference on Monday. "If we manage to beat them, this would be a morale boost for the players."

Also speaking at the press conference was Hamburger keeper Rene Adler, who is set for his Germany comeback on Wednesday.

"It is a sensational experience, as I know how fast things can change," Adler said. The 28-year old will return to the Germany goal after an absence of more than two years. Adler played his last match for Germany in a 0-0 against Sweden in November 2011.

Bayern forward Mario Gomez will start his first match of the year, after falling down the pecking order at his club.

"I know the team currently plays great football," Gomez told the press about his position at Bayern. "What should the boss do? Should he risk that the good run ends as he includes players that have been away for a long time?"

The Germany international missed most of the first half of the Bundesliga season as he had to undergo ankle surgery ahead of the league start in August.

"We have a lot of games to play during the second half of the season. I can evaluate my position," he said. "It is nice to be without pain and I am looking forward to the match."
