Stramaccioni making no excuses

Andrea Stramaccioni has said Inter "are going through a difficult moment" after they lost 3-1 to Serie A's bottom club Siena but has backed his team to finish in the top three this season.

The defeat saw the Nerazzurri slip further behind in their race to secure a Champions League berth and are now level on points with city rivals Milan in fifth place.

However, the 37-year-old coach refused to use the red card received by Cristian Chivu or a growing injury list as excuses for losing to an improving Siena.

"It is without doubt an ugly defeat and we are very angry," he told Sky Italia. "We had a few players missing but there are no alibis for a poor performance.

"Despite the fact we lost, we are still only three points away from the Champions League places, so we cannot give up and have to keep fighting.

"We can still achieve our objective but must find ourselves again, as we are still the team who in November were a point off the leaders and had great ambition."

The former youth team boss, having guided his team to the semi-final of the Coppa Italia and into the knockout phase of the Europa League, still has faith in the squad's ability.

"We are going through a difficult moment, but I am sure we will get out of it," he continued. "It was a bad performance and we deserved the defeat. In these cases either you cry and despair or you try to get back on track, I prefer the latter."
