Defoe and Carrick out for England

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and Manchester United's Michael Carrick are out of the England squad to face to Brazil - and Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge may be withdrawn too.

Defoe had to be substituted in the first half of Spurs' 1-0 win at West Brom after a challenge from Shane Long, while the FA announced that Carrick was suffering from a hip injury and would not join Roy Hodgson's squad ahead of the game at Wembley.

Sturridge was replaced late in his team's 2-2 draw at champions Manchester City.

Defoe's injury leaves Spurs without a recognised striker and also puts him out of the game at Wembley, but he will be sent for a scan to determine the full extent of the damage.

"I am extremely happy with the win - apart from the injury to Jermain Defoe," Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said after the game at The Hawthorns. "He rolled his ankle. He will have to have a scan to reveal the extent of the injury.

"Hopefully there is not a lot of ligament damage. If there is, he could be out for two to three weeks.

"We are safe with the options we have and our goals come from different sources. But it's a setback because he is a big player for us. Jermain has been withdrawn from the England squad. But we have Adebayor coming back and I don't have regrets [about not signing another striker]."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said: "He [Sturridge] got a knock just before half-time on his thigh and he wanted to give it a go in the second half. I think he will be a doubt for the game on Wednesday, which is unfortunate because he was terrific today.

"His hold-up play, movement and pace was a real threat, and combination with Luis Suarez, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson up front was outstanding. He is just with the medics at the moment, and he will have a chat with our doctors and he will speak with the England set-up.

"They might want to have a look at it but at the moment he is obviously struggling.''
