Kruse double a warm-up for Socceroos clash

Australia midfielder Robbie Kruse is looking forward to Wednesday's friendly against Romania after scoring two goals for Fortuna Duesseldorf in the Bundesliga.

The 24-year-old winger netted twice in Saturday's 3-1 win at home to VfB Stuttgart before linking up with the Socceroos, having made the last of his 21 international appearances in October's 2-1 World Cup qualifier win over Iraq.

The former Melbourne Victory star admitted it was more a relief to get three points than to score two goals as Fortuna, 13th in the German league, picked up their first win in four games.

"It's good for me personally to score two goals, and it's good for the team," he said. "Now I'm looking forward to going to Spain to play for the national team."

The Australian has a busy week ahead of Wednesday's international friendly in Malaga, Spain, then returns to Bundesliga action for Fortuna at Freiburg on Friday night.

Having put his side ahead against Stuttgart after only 10 minutes with a right-footed shot from a corner, Kruse beat goalkeeper Sven Ulreich on 37 minutes to help seal victory after defeats to Augsburg and Moenchengladbach.

"We've been very sloppy in the last games, so this will give us a boost," said Kruse. "Our next game against Freiburg will be very important; it's a big game.

"Personally, it is always great to score two goals, but it was far more important to get the three points.

"We worked together really well today and had an excellent structure in our game.

"We were very disappointed after the last two defeats, but we worked really hard in training last week and our reward was a great performance.

"We play in a fantastic league against strong teams, so it's normal that you can't deliver a performance like that every week. I'm much happier about the team's success than about my two goals."

Australia's German coach, Holger Osieck, is looking forward to using next week's friendly to assess the level of his players ahead of their next World Cup qualifier against Oman on March 26 in Sydney.

The Socceroos are in second in Group B, eight points behind runaway leaders Japan.
