Rooney gives up spot duties

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has decided to give up the responsibility of penalty taker, handing the honour to fellow front-man Robin van Persie.

Rooney has surprised United fans by announcing he will not take another penalty this season, after a conversion rate of 19 goals from 28 attempts from the spot.

The self-assessing striker, who most recently missed a penalty in the FA Cup replay victory against West Ham, has labeled his efforts from the spot as 'not good enough'.

"To be honest, it was my choice," Rooney announced. "At a club like this, to miss two penalties the way I have and not hit the target was not good enough."

"I went in to speak with the manager and said, 'I spoke with Robin van Persie and said he can take them'."

Rooney has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks with former United captain Roy Keane saying the miss against West Ham would be the 'last penalty' Rooney would take.
