Ancelotti: Beckham will be PSG's Maldini

PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti has compared star recruit David Beckham to Italian legend Paolo Maldini after the 37-year-old signed a five-month contract with the Paris club.

Beckham has been out of action since he left the Los Angeles Galaxy in early December last year, and with reports claiming Ligue 1 debut is still two weeks away, the former Manchester United midfielder's arrival is dividing popular opinion.

However Ancelotti cannot speak more highly of his new prize, believing Beckham's experience and versatility will outweigh his image of a global celebrity.

"Everyone talks about (Beckham's) image, but I want to emphasise his professionalism and quality on the pitch," Ancelotti told

"It is true that he is not young, but he has experience. (Paolo) Maldini won the Champions League at the age of 39, so Beckham still has lots of time ahead of him."

"He can play every position in midfield - defensive, with his passing ability, or on the right even if he does not have the speed of Lucas.

"He can help the team have a great season."

But the former AC Milan and Chelsea coach did try to temper public expectations, unsure of when Beckham would make his PSG bow after admitting he had only just begun training with his new team-mates.

"He must train as he has returned from vacation … (but) I am very happy with his arrival," Ancelotti said.
