Gomez returns for Germany

Mario Gomez could be set to win his fist cap since Euro 2012 after being selected in Germany's squad for the friendly with France next week, but Bundesliga top-scorer Stefan Kiessling has failed to make the cut.

Gomez, 27, last represented his country in the semi-final defeat to Italy, with injury having ruled him out of adding to his tally of 57 caps ever since.

But with the striker fit and firing again for Bayern Munich, Germany manager Joachim Low has opted to welcome him back to the international scene.

"Mario Gomez is in a good physical condition after his injury," Low said. "Just like Miroslav Klose, he has all it takes to bring our idea of football to life in a centre-forward role."

One name missing from the squad is Kiessling, who has hit 13 goals in the league this term. Although, he could be recalled for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March, Bild reported on Friday.

With seven players from Bayern Munich and five from Borussia Dortmund, Low has also called up the Real Madrid duo Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira, as well as the Arsenal pair Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski.

The squad only includes two goalkeepers, with Hamburg's Rene Adler having been called up as the second-choice keeper behind Manuel Neuer.

"Rene Adler has produced a very strong first half of the season," Low said. "After he returned to the squad against the Netherlands, he has earned his chance to prove himself against France. We will rely on Manuel Neuer for the decisive World Cup qualifiers in March. He currently is our clear number one."

Sought-after Borussia Monchengladbach youngster Marc-Andre Ziegler and former Manchester United keeper Ron-Robert Zieler, currently with Hannover, have not made the cut.

Germany have not won their first match of the calendar year for the last four years. They were defeated 1-0 by Norway in 2009, lost to Argentina by the same result in 2010, drew 1-1 with Italy in 2011 and started 2012 with a 2-1 defeat to France.

Goalkeepers: Rene Adler (Hamburger), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)

Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Benedikt Howedes (Schalke), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Per Mertesacker (Arsenal), Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund), Heiko Westermann (Hamburg)

Midfielders: Lars Bender (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (Schalke), Mario Gotze (Borussia Dortmund), Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund), Sami Khedira (Real Madrid), Toni Kroos (Bayern Munich), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Real Madrid), Lukas Podolski (Arsenal), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Andre Schurrle (Bayer Leverkusen), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)

Strikers: Mario Gomez (Bayern Munich), Miroslav Klose (Lazio)
