Stoke seals Shea signing from Dallas

Stoke has completed the 2.5 million-pound ($3.96 million) signing of United States winger Brek Shea from FC Dallas, hours before the January transfer window closed.

Shea signed a four-and-a-half year contract at the Britannia Stadium after the club made a successful appeal for a work permit earlier Thursday.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis told the club's official website: "It's fantastic news that we have been able to push through a deal.

"Brek is a very, very exciting player, and one who we firmly believe could go on to become an outstanding player for this football club.

Shea has played for Dallas since 2008 and is recovering from November surgery on his right foot. He has no goals in 15 appearances for the U.S. national team. He joins American defender Geoff Cameron on Stoke.

"He has terrific pace, a very good left foot and is capable of scoring goals," Pulis said. "He has all the tools needed to be a success here."

Shea was the Potters' first signing of the January transfer window, and Stoke completed the signing of England international goalkeeper Jack Butland from Birmingham later Friday.

Birmingham accepted an undisclosed fee from the Potters for the 19-year-old, but the keeper is set to stay at the Championship club on loan until the end of the season.

Butland had earlier rejected talks with Chelsea because of his desire to play regular first-team football and had also been linked with Liverpool, Fulham, Newcastle and Manchester City in this transfer window.

Stoke also confirmed that Rory Delap has agreed a loan move to Barnsley until the end of the season.

Information from Press Association and The Associated Press was used in this report.
