QPR signs Christopher Samba

LONDON -- The Premier League's struggling teams were scrambling around on the final day of the January transfer window for players to help save them from relegation.

Last-place Queens Park Rangers was the most active, signing defender Christopher Samba from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala for a reported club-record fee of 12 million pounds ($19 million) while Peter Crouch is on the list of strikers manager Harry Redknapp is actively chasing.

QPR later confirmed the signing of Andros Townsend on loan until the end of the season and fellow Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas on an 18-month contract, but Rangers manager Harry Redknapp says West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie will not be joining the west London club.

A QPR spokesman confirmed to Press Association that Odemwingie was denied access at Loftus Road out of respect to West Brom.

Rs manager Redknapp earlier spoke of his interest in the wantaway Nigerian, and, when the player was interviewed in London speaking of his excitement about a move, it looked as though a deal was on.

But West Brom reacted quickly by releasing a statement which read: "The club can confirm they have held further discussions with QPR today but those talks have so far proven fruitless and no agreement has been reached. Albion would also like to make clear that Peter has not been given permission to speak to QPR about a potential move."

Leaving QPR is midfielder Alejandro Faurlin, who has joined Italian side Palermo on loan.

Meanwhile, Norwich have signed striker Luciano Becchio from Leeds, with Steve Morison going the other way in part-exchange.

Newcastle misfit Xisco ended his miserable four-and-a-half year stay on Tyneside and joined Spanish Segunda Division side Cordoba after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. The Spanish striker joined the Magpies from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008 in a deal worth in the region of 7 million pounds ($11.1 million).

However he made only nine first team appearances and spent spells on loan at Rayo Vallecano and former club Deportivo as he fell further out of favor in the northeast.

Sunderland swooped for a new striker and have completed the signing of Danny Graham from Swansea for 5 million pounds ($7.9 million). The Gateshead-born frontman has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Stadium of Light, just days after he was booed by some of the Black Cats fans when he appeared against them for the Swans.

As a result, Louis Saha has left the Wearside club by mutual consent.

Wigan confirmed the signing of Paul Scharner on loan from Hamburg for the rest of the season. Scharner is returning to the DW Stadium having spent more than four years with the Latics before leaving for West Brom in the summer of 2010.

AC Milan's utility player Urby Emanuelson has joined Fulham on loan for the rest of the campaign. The 26-year-old, a left-sided full back or midfielder, has 16 caps for Holland and played for Cottagers boss Martin Jol during his time at Ajax.

Fulham also acquired defender Stanislav Manolev on loan until end of the season from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. The deal for the 29-year-old right-back comes with an option of two further years if he impresses Jol. Fulham also picked up Ajax midfielder Eyong Enoh on a similar deal with minutes to spare.

Aston Villa has also been active, adding Tottenham winger Simon Dawkins on loan until the end of the season and sealing the signing of French midfielder Yacouba Sylla from Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot.

Dawkins had spent two seasons on loan with the San Jose Earthquakes, where he scored 14 goals.

Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has joined German side Hoffenheim on loan until the end of the season after passing a physical Thursday.

Spurs also confirmed that 19-year-old midfielder Alex Pritchard has joined the Championship's bottom club, Peterborough, on loan until the end of the season while Ryan Mason has left for Lorient, also on loan, until May.

Everton signed defender John Stones from Barnsley on a five-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee, the Championship club confirmed. Toffees midfielder Magaye Gueye joined Ligue 1 club Brest on loan until the end of the season.

Earlier, Manchester City also confirmed Mario Balotelli had completed his move to AC Milan.

Milan said Balotelli has signed a four-and-a-half year contract -- the fee is understood to be 19 million pounds ($30 million), rising to 22 million ($34.9 million).

Elsewhere, Liverpool goalkeeper Alexander Doni is returning to his native Brazil to join Botafogo on a free transfer while Newcastle has completed the signing of Swiss teenager Kevin Mbabu from Servette for an undisclosed fee.
