Beckham joins Paris Saint-Germain

David Beckham has joined Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain on a five-month deal after the expiry of his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Beckham passed a medical at the Pitié Salpétrière hospital in Paris on Thursday afternoon before being presented at a press conference.

“We are very lucky to have him here,” club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said. “David is a very professional player and I’m sure he will add big value to the club. He will be an asset to the club. I’m very happy to be sitting next to David here.”

The 37-year-old had also received offers from South America, North America, South Africa, Russia, China, the Middle East and other European clubs. However, Beckham - who said he will donate his salary to a children's charity in Paris - has opted to test himself in Ligue 1 as he looks to compete for silverware after a glittering career with Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and Milan.

"I'm excited," Beckham, who revealed his French could use some work, said. "It's something we've been talking about for quite a while. I'm very lucky. I'm 37 years old and I got a lot of offers - more now than I've probably had in my career. I chose Paris because I can see what the club are trying to do - I can see the players the club are bringing in.

"There is a club that is going to have a lot of success over the next ten, 15, 20 years. For now, to be part of something is growing is exciting. I'm very honoured that I've been picked to be part of the future at PSG."

Beckham, who had been training with Arsenal, said he was flattered to have received offers from the English top flight but added: "I've always said that unless it was Manchester United I wouldn't want to play for another Premiership team."

The midfielder had previously worked with PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti and sporting director Leonardo during his time on loan with AC Milan and spoke highly of the duo.

"The lure of being part of one of the biggest European clubs around with one of the best managers - Carlo is one of the best managers I've played for - is exciting on a number of levels," he said.

France coach Didier Deschamps had earlier suggested the ex-England captain's true worth is off the pitch rather than on it.

"In terms of media exposure, it's a good thing," Deschamps explained at a press conference to announce his squad for next week's friendly with Germany. "Like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, these sorts of players give Ligue 1 greater visibility abroad. Don't ask me about the sporting aspect of it though. It's a choice made by the Paris board. He's a world football personality."

Meanwhile, PSG have loaned midfielder Mathieu Bodmer, 30, to Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the season.
