Brunt: Odemwingie owes WBA fans

Peter Odewingie has been warned by his captain Chris Brunt that he will have to win West Bromwich Albion’s fans over again if he is still at The Hawthorns after transfer deadline day.

Peter Odemwingie hasn't made a start since West Brom's 2-0 loss to Manchester United in December

Brunt has backed the Baggies’ tough stance over his team-mate’s transfer request and does not believe the rebuilding of bridges would be easy.

QPR have expanded their transfer search to take in a host of other targets since having two bids turned down for Odemwingie, who may be back in Albion’s squad as early as Sunday’s home game against Tottenham.

There is anger in the Hawthorns dressing room at the Nigerian’s tweets on the matter and Brunt said: “It’s not something we want to be involved in and I’m sure, deep down, it’s not something Peter wants to be involved in either.

“He’s contracted to West Brom and if the club don’t get what they see as fair value for him, why should they sell him?

“He’s one of our best players and somebody who, on his day, can make something happen for us.

“It’s a difficult situation for everybody. I’m sure nobody would have wanted it to come to this but there’s a lot of player power in this day and age. He’s obviously not happy here but there’s not much we can do about that now. It’s disappointing it’s turned out like this because he’s a talented boy and we would like to have him here. He has put himself in a difficult situation.

“If he plays, it will benefit us but he’s probably in for a rough time.””

Albion, having not expected to be doing any pre-deadline recruiting, were today considering a u-turn after the disappointment of a seventh game without a victory was compounded by a potentially serious injury to George Thorne in last night’s 2-1 defeat at Everton.

The young midfielder suffered a knee problem when twisting innocuously and was being looked at today.
