Dundee United hoping to land McNamara

Dundee United could be set to announce the appointment of Jackie McNamara as their new manager on Wednesday after being granted permission to speak to him by Partick Thistle.

United have been managerless since Peter Houston left by mutual consent on Monday, following concerns he would not be renewing his contract.

And despite Falkirk boss Steven Pressley having been the original favourite, McNamara seems to have edged in front of him to take over at Tannadice, along with his assistant Simon Donnelly.

A statement from McNamara's club on Tuesday night read: "Following an approach from Dundee United, the board of directors of Partick Thistle Football Club have reluctantly granted permission for Jackie McNamara and Simon Donnelly to speak to them about their vacant managerial position.''

United are keen to have McNamara in place in time to prepare for the club's biggest game of their season so far on Saturday, when they host Rangers in the Scottish Cup fifth round.

McNamara has impressed in his first management job after turning Thistle into First Division title contenders.
