Rodgers keen for new Gerrard deal

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has indicated that he is keen to offer captain Steven Gerrard a new contract at Anfield.

• Blog: Reds must not kid themselves

Gerrard, 32, has made 428 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, scoring 94 times.

The midfielder's current contract is due to expire at the end of the 2013-14 season but such is his worth to the team that Rodgers is hopeful of extending his stay.

"As yet I don't believe anything has been done [about a new contract]," he told the Guardian.

"Steven and I have spoken a number of times. His feeling the last time we spoke was to get through this season and see how that goes. His focus is on really helping the group to go forward.

"There's no doubt that, between now and the end of this season, the contract will be looked at. With each day that goes on, you see the real importance he still has to the club. At 32 years of age, he still looks so fit, strong, and you can see his influence on the team."

Rodgers believes the high regard he has for Gerrard is also felt by Liverpool's American owners. "They watch all the games from afar. They understand and I have regular dialogue with them," he said.

"I can only feed back in terms of his qualities both as a player and as a leader of the club. As a captain, he's been phenomenal. It's not like they don't get to know about it.

"Steven Gerrard is a unique player. When he came on at Oldham [on Sunday] it was like someone had dropped him from heaven into the game. We went to a totally different level when he came on.

"Unfortunately at this stage, I can't say that, without Steven Gerrard, we would be alright - because I don't believe we would. This is a top, top player who gives so much quality but also enthusiasm."

Meanwhile, midfielder Joe Allen, who was signed from Swansea City for £15 million, has said he is disappointed with his recent form.

"In recent times, I think it goes without saying it [my form] has been slightly disappointing, but I am faithful and confident that I will turn things around on a personal level," Allen told the club's website.

"It's games like Wednesday where, if I can be involved in some way, I can get my performance levels higher.

"The games against Arsenal and Manchester City earlier in the season are probably the level I am hoping to reach again and be more consistent with.

"There is no magic formula. I'll keep working hard and keep faithful there will be another performance like that just around the corner."
