Terry condemns 'lacklustre' Chelsea

John Terry has warned his Chelsea team-mates that they are in danger of disappointing the club's fans as their season threatens to end in a dismal fashion.

• Benitez: Top four is a must

The Blues' 2-2 FA Cup draw with League One side Brentford on Sunday, on the back of their Capital One Cup exit at the hands of Swansea, sparked speculation that interim boss Rafael Benitez may not see out the season.

But Terry insists it is the players and not their beleaguered manager who need to rise to the challenge.

"We need to liven up a bit and realise the importance to the fans and the club," Benitez told Chelsea TV. "Fair play to Brentford, they played well, but we need to liven up. I was disappointed because we didn't fight and they wanted it more than us. We were lacklustre.

"The fact is we're not winning any trophies at the moment. It was disappointing not scoring over two legs of the semi-final against Swansea. At home we did better, but going there, I'd rather we'd lost 2-0 or 4-0 and give it a go and we didn't do that."

Terry admits his successful comeback from a knee injury has been tempered by Chelsea's slump in form, as he has urged his team-mates to raise their game ahead of Wednesday's Premier League trip to Reading.

"Champions League football is a must next season," he said. "We saw last season, going to the Champions League final, suffering with all the extra games and we ended up finishing sixth last season. It's difficult, but we have a squad and we have to step up."
