Benitez unlikely to make further additions

Rafa Benitez has said it is unlikely that Chelsea will make any further signings in the January window and echoed Arsene Wenger by questioning the logistics of the transfer market.

Despite Benitez bemoaning his team's high number of fixtures as well as what he called a "short", the Blues have made only one signing since he became interim manager - Demba Ba from Newcastle United.

The Spaniard, however, feels signings will prove unnecessary once the squad gets over the intensity of the January schedule and key players start to return.

Asked whether he anticipated any transfers, he said: "I don’t think so.

"My job is to improve my squad, try and manage the situation we have. I'm really pleased with some players.

“People can talk about this player or that player, but people like Ryan Bertrand, for example, played as a winger. He’s not a winger.

"I’m really pleased with Ramires and Lampard in central midfield, and Ashley Cole. We have players who have to play in different positions, but they’re still doing a great job.

“Nine days ago, we beat Arsenal playing a fantastic game. We have to analyse the bigger picture.”

He said the Stamford Bridge club were “maybe short” in some positions, but “still have a good squad”.

“If the players come back, and we don't have injuries, it'll be fine and we can do well,” he added. “We're in so many competitions because the team was successful. Now we have less games to play and three or four more bodies coming back will make it easier."

Meanwhile, Benitez said he believed the January window could do with an overhaul, adding: "January is always quite dangerous when there aren't too many good players available, or people need more time to settle down.

"The debate should be whether the transfer window should be in the summer [only]. You can have too many players, agents talking about everything, but you have to concentrate on football - and that's not easy."
