Peru player faces doping suspension

FIFA has announced the provisional suspension of a Peru player who failed a doping test after a World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in October.

World football's governing body did not name the player in question, but earlier this month the Peruvian Football Federation said midfielder Joel Sanchez had tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a banned substance.

In a statement, FIFA said the player had initially been banned for 30 days and would have until Monday to request a hearing. Both the player and the Peruvian federation have until February 6 to submit a statement and documentary evidence.

"In line with the FIFA anti-doping regulations, only after it has been determined in a hearing that an anti-doping violation has occurred may FIFA publicly report the anti-doping rule violated, the name of the player who committed the violation, the prohibited substance and the consequences imposed," a FIFA statement said.

Manuel Burga, the Peruvian federation president, said the substance for which Universidad San Martin's Sanchez had tested positive was included in a supplement recommended to him by a nutritionist.
