SPL clubs back league restructure

All 12 Scottish Premier League clubs have given their "unanimous backing" to the proposed revamp of the Scottish league structure, according to SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

The Scottish Football Association are hoping to introduce a new 12-12-18 league structure, with the top two divisions dividing into three groups of eight after 22 games.

The clubs met at Hampden Park to discuss the matter on Monday, while the Scottish Football League clubs will gather to talk about the proposals on Thursday.

"We got unanimous backing of the way forward so it now goes to Thursday and the Scottish Football League clubs will have their views," Doncaster said. "The Scottish Premier League clubs were united in their view that this is the way forward."

The plans were originally backed by SPL and SFL clubs last year, however, some doubt had emerged since both leagues had agreed in principle to the plans earlier this month in conjunction with the SFA, whose professional game board (PGB) has been driving reconstruction attempts.

There were also some clubs who were not involved in the original meetings and had requested more information following scepticism from fans.

"We provided further details that have arisen from meetings over the past weeks," Doncaster said. "The last time that all of our SPL clubs got together was on December 3 so in the intervening time there has been some more detail that's been discussed with the PGB and with the SFL board. All of that was provided today and the clubs are clear and united and unanimous in their view that this should be taken forward to the next stage."
