Lambert vows to fight on

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert insists he will not walk away from the club, while revealing that he has been given further backing from chairman Randy Lerner.

• Blog: Why Lambert must stay

The Villa boss faces the possibility of a hostile reception from fans during the vital relegation-clash with Newcastle on Tuesday, following the club's recent FA Cup and Capital One Cup exits to lower-league opposition.

Despite the losses to Bradford and Millwall, though, Lerner is determined to stand by the man he appointed to succeed Alex McLeish in the summer.

The former Norwich manager says he held an encouraging phone call with Lerner and that the owner has told him to "keep on fighting" in his bid to turn around Villa's difficult season.

Some Villa supporters have questioned whether Lambert is the man to lead the club out of trouble, but when asked if there was any chance he would walk away, he replied: "No. I can only do, or try to do, my best. There's no chance I'd walk away.

"You have to fight like anything to get up. You pick yourself up and there's no point in lying down and accepting it. I've never had a run like this as a manager, or been hit from pillar to post like this. It's an experience you take on board and you use it.

"You can't have everything going your way in your managerial career every single time. You have to take the rough with the smooth and when the rough comes you take it."

Lambert is hoping to have experienced defender Richard Dunne available for the visit of Newcastle, but again intimated it is unlikely there will be any signings made before Thursday's transfer deadline.

Dunne has not played all season because of a persistent groin injury, but the Villa boss will leave a decision until late as possible over the Ireland international.

"At this minute there's not much really happening. There's been guys we went for who have gone to other clubs," Lambert said. "How many players are we short? There's a few. But I knew the remit of it was to rebuild it. To rebuild something you have to strip it back.

"I'm pretty sure the chairman knows exactly what he is doing. It's his money and he's the man who has put money into the club. If you are asking me if there will be a vast amount of money (available) in the window, there won't be."
