Sammer urges duo to quash egos

As Bayern Munich went 11 points clear at the top of the table this weekend, the club's general manager Matthias Sammer urged benched stars Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben not to let their egos cause a problem in the squad.

Croatia international Mario Mandzukic has starred while Gomez has been out injured and scored one, while setting up the second in Bayern's 2-0 over Stuttgart on Sunday.

Indeed, the Croatia international has kept his place now that Gomez is fit again and was only replaced as a last-minute substitute, while Robben was not used from the bench at all. Neither looked happy after the game and refused to comment on their situation after the match.

Questioned about whether the duo will cause issues, Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes told Sky: "There will be no disturbance. I will take care of this," adding that with all players fit he did not see the need to make changes to the team that had beaten Furth the week before.

Heynckes was backed by general manager Matthias Sammer who insisted that, despite Thomas Muller and Mandzukic's partnership of 22 goals, all players would be needed in the coming months.

"I don't want to hear anything, absolutely nothing," he said. "The momentum speaks for the players, who have played today.

"We will need every single player. The momentum speaks against those players, but they train well. I don't want to experience egos which lead to unneeded discussions. We will not allow the attempts of egoism."

Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge later added. "It is difficult for those who don't play. Certainly he [Robben] is not satisfied with not playing but we will need him."
