Evra desperate to win FA Cup

Patrice Evra has one important medal missing from his collection - and is determined to put that right by winning the FA Cup with Manchester United this season.

• Blog: Giggs guides United through

Evra, 31, was won the Club World Cup, the Champions League, four Premier League titles and three League Cup winner's medals in seven years at Old Trafford. But the left-back has never managed to get his hands on the FA Cup, and that is something he is determined to put right.

United haven't won the trophy since 2004, when they beat Millwall 3-0 in the final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. As far as Evra is concerned, that is far too long.

Indeed, the defender has admitted that it got him down that United failed to complete a Treble in 2008 by missing out on the FA Cup.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side were domestic champions that year, and followed it up by beating Chelsea on penalties in Moscow to land the Champions League title, but were knocked out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage by Portsmouth.

And when United's squad photos were taken at the start of the following season, the disappointment of missing out on the cup was written on Evra's face.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "I remember in 2008, when we won the Champions League and the Premier League, we were having our photos taken with the trophies and someone said to me: 'Patrice, you don't look happy.' I said: 'It's because we are missing the FA Cup'.

"I don't want to sound greedy but it was very frustrating that year to lose to Portsmouth in the quarter-finals when we really believed that we could win all three trophies.

"I was devastated. The FA Cup means so much and one day I hope I will win it. Hopefully this year."

United needed a late Robin van Persie equaliser to save them from a third-round exit at West Ham this year, earning a 2-2 draw at Upton Park before winning the replay 1-0.

Saturday's 4-1 victory over Fulham was rather more comfortable, setting up a fifth-round home clash with Reading.

"I was so happy when we beat West Ham, even though I didn't play in either of the games," Evra said. "I watched the away game on the TV and I was screaming when Robin scored.

"It is the only trophy I have not won at Manchester United. That seems impossible given that I am now in my seventh year here. The boss has given a big message this season - he really wants to win the FA Cup. He really wants it and so do we."

Evra captained United against Fulham as Ferguson rested regular skipper Nemanja Vidic, and squad rotation is likely to be key to ensuring players stay fresh as they chase a treble this season.

"We have a big squad but also we don't look at it as different competitions," Evra added. "I don't focus on the names of the competition, I look at the opponents and think: 'We have to beat them because we are United'.

"You more take notice of the competition if you are in the semi-final of a knockout tournament but, at this stage, each match is just another game. We think only about winning, winning, winning. Get the momentum and keep going."
