Benitez backs Terry to be a manager

Rafael Benitez believes Chelsea captain John Terry has the required qualities to shine as a manager.

• Chelsea escape Bees' sting

While interim boss Benitez has made it clear that he is eager to continue his tenure as Chelsea manager, despite a series of setbacks in his spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, his words of support for Terry reaffirm the theory that the long-standing skipper will realise his dream of becoming Stamford Bridge boss one day.

"It is quite possible that John has the good qualities to become a manager," Benitez said of Terry, who is edging towards the end of his playing career at the age of 32.

"I have had players in the past who have been big names, but they did not understand the game like him. He likes talking about tactics. He seems as though he understands and, with the way he treats the young players and takes care of them."

After Terry made his first start for Chelsea since mid-November in Sunday's FA Cup draw against League One side Brentford at Griffin Park, Benitez is backing his talisman to revive his side's flagging fortunes in the final few months of the campaign.

"John is a great player and a great leader," stated Benitez. "Maybe in some games we lacked something like this recently, but John can now be a key player for us for the rest of the season."

Benitez went on to insist he is eager to battle on as Chelsea boss, despite receiving further abuse from the club's supporters during the gripping FA Cup tie against Brentford.

Blues fans chanted 'you don't know what you're doing' in Benitez's direction during the 2-2 draw against the League One team on Sunday, but he was unwavering with his retort.

"I guarantee that sending on Juan Mata and changing the game showed we do know what we are doing," he said.

"We have to remember that this is a transition period at the club. They wanted a manager with experience and I will continue to try and do my best."
