Drogba, Galatasaray close in on deal

Didier Drogba's management company says Turkish side Galatasaray has made a contract offer to sign Chelsea's Champions League-winning hero.

A spokesperson for the Sports PR Company confirmed the offer in an interview with Press Association Sport on Sunday: "They have made a formal bid for him."

Galatasaray confirmed Monday that they are negotiating the deal.

"Galatasaray Sports Club has begun official negotiations regarding the transfer of Ivorian professional football player Didier Drogba from FC Shanghai Shenhua," the club said on its website.

The 34-year-old left Chelsea for China last year after helping the west London side to their first Champions League title.

Turkish media reports say a deal could be done as early as Sunday night for the 34-year-old forward, with reports citing agreement to an 18-month contract.

The Turkish champion has already signed Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder this month as it looks to boost its squad after reaching the last 16 of the Champions League, where it will face Schalke, and it has also been heavily linked with Manchester City defender Kolo Toure.

Drogba's last act for the Blues before joining China's Shanghai Shenhua last summer was scoring the winning penalty in their final shootout triumph.

Last month, Drogba returned to train with his old club during the Chinese offseason in preparation for the African Nations Cup, in which he is currently competing in South Africa.

FIFA rejected a special request from the striker for him to join a club on loan outside the transfer window, amid speculation linking him with Juventus, AC Milan and Liverpool, among others.

Despite his protests to the contrary, reports persisted that Drogba's move to China had not worked out, largely due to boardroom wrangling.

He signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Shenhua, netting him around $395,000 a week and reuniting him with Nicolas Anelka.

Anelka is on the verge of joining Juventus on a deal until the end of the season.
