Milan edge past ten men

Stephan El Shaarawy scored his first goal in five games to beat ten-man Atalanta 1-0 and fire AC Milan up to fifth in the Serie A table.

• Juventus 1-1 Genoa
• Lazio 0-1 Chievo

The prodigiously talented striker had gone missing over recent games, having provided Milan's biggest threat in the first half of the season, but his clinical finish gave the visitors the lead at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.

Atalanta refused to surrender, though, and their bid for a first win in six games only unravelled when Davide Brivio was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in the second half. From that point on Milan might have run riot, but they failed to capitalise on a host of gilt-edged chances as time ticked away.

Edinson Cavani struck a late winner as Napoli took full advantage of Juventus' slip on Saturday to close back to within three points of the Serie A pacesetters with a 2-1 victory over Parma.

It appeared Napoli would have to settle for a draw at the Stadio Ennio Tardini after Paolo Cannavaro's 75th-minute own goal cancelled out Marek Hamsik's first-half opener.

However, Cavani had other ideas and the in-form Uruguayan raced clear five minutes from the end to slot home the winning goal and inflict a first home league defeat on Parma since last March.

Inter Milan were fortunate to salvage a 2-2 draw against a resilient Torino outfit after being dominated for much of the match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Cristian Chivu gave Inter an early lead after curling a free kick beyond Jean-Francois Gillet, but Riccardo Meggiorini equalised for Torino shortly after with a cracking shot from the edge of the box.

Former Inter striker Meggiorini netted his second of the match in the 52nd minute, finishing off an inch-perfect Alessio Cerci cross and the visitors looked in firm control of proceedings.

But despite the relentless pressure from Torino, Inter struck back through Esteban Cambiasso to steal a point.

Bologna and Roma shared six goals between them at the Stadio Dall'Ara, living up to the pre-match expectations in an entertaining 3-3 draw.

Alessandro Florenzi gave Roma the lead in the ninth minute, but Alberto Gilardino levelled in the 17th minute. Daniel Osvaldo put Roma back in front within a minute only for Manolo Gabbiadini to re-establish parity before the break.

Cristian Pasquato put Bologna ahead for the first time in the game in the 54th minute but Panagiotis Tachtsidis scored the final goal in the 74th minute before Bologna hit the woodwork twice.

A solitary goal from Luis Muriel was enough for Udinese to take all three points from bottom-placed Siena without getting out of first gear at the Stadio Friuli.

Muriel took Udinese's first and practically only chance of the game 10 minutes before the interval to earn all three points, which have edged them up towards the European qualifying berths as a result.

Mauro Icardi scored four goals as Sampdoria lifted themselves clear of the relegation zone with a 6-0 victory over fellow strugglers Pescara at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Eder set Samp on their way from the penalty spot just after the half-hour mark and Icardi doubled their advantage before the interval. The floodgates opened after the restart, Pedro Obiang making it 3-0 before Icardi took centre stage with three further goals to seal the rout.

Catania came from behind to claim a 2-1 win and deny Vincenzo Montella any joy on his return to the Stadio Angelo Massimino as ten-man Fiorentina slipped out of the top five.

Viola boss Montella guided Catania to a surprise 11th-placed league finish last season but Giulio Migliaccio put the 39-year-old's current club on the road to victory with a first-half header.

Nicola Legrottaglie pegged the visitors back shortly after the break, with Alberto Aquilani's late dismissal proving costly as Lucas Castro snatched the winner two minutes from time.

Palermo remain mired in the battle to avoid relegation after substitute Thiago Ribeiro denied the Sicilians in a 1-1 draw at Cagliari.

A remarkable finish from Josip Ilicic put Gian Piero Gasperini's Rosanero on the road to a first win in eight attempts, a result that would have lifted his side to within one point of safety if not for Cagliari's late rally.

Goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino, signed from Chievo this week, kept the Rossoblu at bay for 90 minutes but Ribeiro capitalised on one lapse of concentration. To add insult to injury, Gasperini and his benched striker Fabrizio Miccoli both saw red for overzealously challenging a marginal call over a throw-in.
