Ranger released on bail after rape arrest

Newcastle striker Nile Ranger has been released on bail by police after being arrested on suspicion of rape.

Northumbria police were contacted by a woman who claimed to have been raped by the 21-year-old in a hotel room, with the incident allegedly happening at a hotel in the Jesmond area of Newcastle this week.

Ranger was met at his Forrest Hall home by police on Thursday evening and taken to Wallsend police station for questioning.

A Northumbria police spokesperson said: "On Thursday, January 24, a woman reported to police that she had been raped overnight at a hotel in Jesmond. A 21-year-old man has been arrested at an address in Forest Hall on suspicion of rape."

Later, Ranger was bailed after being questioned by detectives and the Northumbria Police spokesman said: "A 21-year-old has been released on bail.''

Ranger has had a troubled time at Newcastle. In August 2011, he was given a 12-month conditional discharge for "two counts of assault by beating against two police officers" following an incident in the centre of Newcastle.

A month later, the former England youth international was arrested for drink-driving. He pleaded guilty and was given a £3,300 fine and a 12-month ban.

In March, he was fined £6,000 by the FA for tweeting a homophobic slur.

The striker has also been subject to disciplinary measures from his club for consistent lateness, with manager Alan Pardew banning him from first team training sessions last year.
