Ethiopia punished for crowd disorder

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Ethiopia $10,000 and banned goalkeeper Jemal Tassew for two games following incidents during the 1-1 draw with Zambia on Monday.

Tassew was red-carded in the 35th minute of the teams' African Nations Cup opener in Nelspruit after a collision in which his raised foot connected with Zambia's Chisamba Lungu. The referee, deeming the kick to be deliberate, sent the goalkeeper off as he was carried from the field on a stretcher.

The dismissal prompted angry scenes among the Ethiopia supporters, with items including vuvuzelas being thrown onto the field. The Ethiopian Football Association will have to pay $5,000 as a result of the disorder in the stands, CAF said, with the other $5,000 suspended for the remainder of the tournament.

Tassew will also miss the final two games in Group C, against Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
