Puyol signs new Barca deal

Carles Puyol has signed a new Barcelona contract which ties him to the club until June 30, 2016.

• Iniesta: Valdes deserves respect

Puyol and his agent sat down with club president Sandro Rosell on Tuesday afternoon to complete the formalities on the deal, which was agreed in December, and is likely to tie the 34-year-old to the club for the remainder of his playing days.

The news was announced via a statement on Barca's official website.

"This Tuesday afternoon the Barca captain signed his contract extension that will keep him at the club through June 30 of 2016," the statement read. "The ceremony was attended by Carles Puyol, his representative, president Sandro Rosell, vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta. The agreement to extend the player's contract was made public on December 18. Puyol's contract was set to expire on June 30 of 2013.

"Puyol, 34 years old, made his debut with the first team in the 1999-2000 season. Since then, first as a wide right defender then as a centre-back, he has become one of the best defenders in the world. He has been the team captain since 2004, he has won - among other titles - three Champions Leagues, five Ligas and two cups and he is the second player in Barca history to play the most games in the blaugrana strip."

The Spain international has made 14 appearances and scored two goals so far this season as Barca have raced into an eight-point lead in the Primera Division and reached the Copa del Rey quarter-finals and Champions League last 16.

Puyol's team-mates Xavi Hernandez and Lionel Messi are expected to formalise the inking of their new contracts, which will run until 2016 and 2018 respectively, in the coming weeks.

Contract negotiations with Victor Valdes have not gone as well, however, with the Barca goalkeeper's agent, Gines Carvajal, announcing last week that his client had no intention of extending his contract, which expires in June 2014.
