Cardiff snap up Campbell

Cardiff City have signed Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell on a three-and-a-half-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £1 million.

Sunderland's Fraizer Campbell celebrates his goal
Fraizer Campbell found life tough at Sunderland

Campbell, 25, joined the Black Cats from Manchester United in 2009 for £3.5 million. Despite making nearly 60 Premier League appearances for the club, the former England Under-21 international was only able to register six league goals during an injury-plagued three-and-half years on Wearside.

The striker had been linked with a return to Hull City - where he spent a season on loan - and former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, who signed the player for the Black Cats. The former Tottenham and Royal Antwerp man was out of contract in the summer, and had found first-team opportunities limited, due in part to the form of Steven Fletcher

Campbell is the second striker to depart the Stadium of Light in January, following Ji Dong-Won’s loan move to German side Augsburg. The deal’s completion also means manager Martin O’Neill is increasingly likely to require a new striker before the January transfer window closes in just over a week’s time.

Sunderland have been linked heavily with Swansea striker Danny Graham, with Swans boss Michael Laudrup confirming last week the club had received bids for the player.

"Everywhere it is saying there have been some official bids, it is true," he said. “But apart from that I don't really have any comment as in the next four days we have two very important games.”

However, following Saturdays 3-1 win over Stoke City, Laudrup was unable to provide clarity on Graham’s future.

“I don’t know, I can’t really answer that question. I don’t even know if Danny can, we’ll have to just see what happens,” he told the BBC.
