Inter boss glad 'soap opera' is over

Wesley Sneijder has been given the full backing of his former Inter Milan team-mates as he looks to finally complete his €7.5 million move to Galatasaray, while manager Andrea Stramaccioni has revealed his relief at the saga coming to an end.

Sneijder has not played for Inter since September

Sneijder, 28, has taken over a week to agree on a transfer to the Turkish capital after reports suggested that the player had been stalling as he was reluctant to make the move, however, Galatasaray claim he is having a medical with them on Monday.

Inter are expected to pay around a third of the transfer fee that they receive to the Netherlands international in order for him to terminate his lucrative contract, which had over three years left to run.

Yet, according to figures in Monday’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, the San Siro club will save around €30 million in wages, given the level of tax they paid on his salary, which is believed to be the key reason for his departure.

While wishing Sneijder well, his old team-mates believe they have lost a key member of the squad and are sad to see him leave.

“As captain and as his friend, I wish him well,” Zanetti told Sky Italia. “He proved at Inter to be a player of value, a great player.

“He’s now made this personal choice and I hope that everything goes as well as he hopes. Good luck to him.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Cristian Chivu.

"He's my friend and team-mate,” Chivu told the club’s official website. “I wish him all the best in the world. I'll speak to him on the phone."

In contrast, Stramaccioni was pleased to see the matter finally brought to a close.

“For the good of Wes and Inter, the important thing is for this soap opera to end,” he said.
