Diego set for new Wolfsburg deal

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego could be offered a new contract after turning around his fortunes at the club.

Wolfsburg's Diego spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid
Diego has been in impressive form of late

Diego, 27, produced yet another man of the match display in Wolfsburg’s 2-0 win over Stuttgart at the weekend, scoring one and creating another.

Yet only last summer, following a loan spell at Atletico Madrid, the Brazil international looked set for the exit door with the then manager Felix Magath deeming him surplus to requirements. However, Diego insisted he wanted to prove his worth and soon returned to form under caretaker boss Lorenz-Gunter Kostner before starring in new manager Dieter Hecking’s first game on Saturday.

Diego, who is currently under contract until 2014, could now be rewarded for turning his career around at the club, with general manager Klaus Allofs sending out the right signals.

Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung reported that talks on a new deal could well take place in the near future, while Allofs refused to deny the claims.

“You can look up our arguments in the papers,” he said.

Last week, German magazine Der Spiegel reported that Diego’s contract currently earns him €8.2 million a year, excluding bonuses.

“That’s part of the business,” Diego said. “I don’t have a problem with people discussing my salary. One thing is for sure, I work hard for my money and don’t steal it from anyone.”

Allofs defended the player, saying: “Those salaries are pretty common in the Bundesliga.”
