Saints fans to protest against sacking

Southampton Independent Supporters' Association are calling for a 'white handkerchief protest' against the sacking of manager Nigel Adkins at Monday night's Premier League game against Everton.

Adkins was "relieved of his duties" by executive chairman Nicola Cortese on Friday despite dragging Southampton out of the relegation zone on a five-game unbeaten run and a spell of form which has seen the club lose just two of their last 12 games.

Former Espanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino was immediately installed as Adkins' successor and Saints supporters are up in arms over the decision to replace the boss who earned successive promotions with a man most fans have never heard of.

Perry McMillan of the Supporters' Association is hoping the fans turn up at St Mary's en masse with their white handkerchiefs in a show of protest at the decision. However, although Espanyol are from the Spanish league, Pochettino is actually Argentinean.

"As Spanish supporters wave white hankies as a form of protest it seems an appropriate way to protest at executive chairman Nicola Cortese's ruthless treatment of Nigel Adkins," McMillan said.

"It's important we send out this message, as this match is live on TV and will be seen throughout Europe."

Southampton lie 15th in the Premier League table, three points above Reading and Wigan Athletic in the relegation places.
