Huntelaar: I snubbed England for Schalke

Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has revealed he chose signing a new contract at the club over a move to the Premier League.

Huntelaar, 29, reportedly had plenty of opportunities to make a move to England with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool believed to be interested in signing him for free next summer, when his original contract was set to expire.

However, the Netherlands international ended the speculation in December by deciding to commit his future to the German club for a further two years.

Despite weighing up both options, Huntelaar was eager to continue his journey at Schalke.

"I thought about England, I have never played there. It was between Schalke or the Premier League," he told WAZ. "I always had a good feeling about Schalke, but I wanted to wait and see where we are heading. And I had to find out what I want.

"Leaving Schalke after three years would have been a good time to make the move. I've never spent more than three years at one club and it will now be five at Schalke - nearly half my career. In November I knew that was what I wanted. I told my agent, 'let's do the Schalke deal'."

Huntelaar also admits that it was the unpredictability at the club, as well as the commitment of the fans that persuaded him to stay.

"There is always something happening at Schalke. I love the extremes," Huntelaar said. "When we have bad runs, the atmosphere is really bad and you feel that. But you know, when you are on a good run again, it just tops everything - then it is just super! When you see how enthusiastic the folks are, then it is great to do your share."

Schalke resume their Bundesliga season against Hannover on Friday after the winter break, however Huntelaar is to miss out through suspension. He will make his return to the side in time for the clash with Augsburg next week.
