Heynckes to retire

At his first press conference after the appointment of Pep Guardiola, Jupp Heynckes insisted that his career was all but over.

On Friday the Bayern Munich boss told the press that when his contract finishes at the end of the season it will be time for him "to announce his retirement", admitting he decided he was on his final year in the dugout last summer.

"Fundamentally, I took the decision last summer," he said and revealed he had informed Bayern president Uli Hoeness, telling him: "If you don't find an adequate solution, we can talk about it."

Heynckes also revealed he was informed about, but not involved in, the signing of Pep Guardiola. About handing the job to a 42-year-old, Heynckes said: "I think it is good - handing the job from one who has seen everything to a younger coach who has already been pretty successful."

"My successor is a wise man," Heynckes went on. "He analysed the top European clubs and realised Bayern Munich is the club he can be most successful at."

Heynckes also commented that choosing the Bundesliga over the Premier League was a good decision for Guardiola.

He said: "I would not go to England as a coach and don't know what will happen in four months time or how the owner will react."
