Adan calms talk of Ronaldo-Mourinho fight

Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan says that media stories of an angry row between Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho after Tuesday's Copa del Rey win over Valencia were overblown.

Widespread reports in the Spanish media this week have claimed that Ronaldo and Mourinho clashed after the 2-0 quarter-final first leg victory at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Spanish TV showed pictures of the manager angrily remonstrating with his player towards the end of the game, with journalists at the stadium then hearing an angry exchange of views coming from the dressing-room and some claiming that other players had to step between the pair to calm the situation down.

However, Adan said on Thursday that the incident had been blown out of proportion by the media and was just a normal post-match discussion.

"This confrontation did not even happen, the coach gave an opinion, the player gave his and we are all adults," he said. "You can give different opinions even if they are opposed, with the player showing respect for the coach, and the coach towards the player."

The goalkeeper, a product of his club's La Fabrica youth academy, has recently played in place of Iker Casillas for Madrid's La Liga games, amid speculation that Mourinho and the long-serving number one have had their differences.

Adan, who missed last weekend's La Liga trip to Osasuna through suspension after being sent off at home to Real Sociedad, said Mourinho had not yet revealed who would start Sunday's league clash with Valencia at the Mestalla.

"I will train (on Friday) and I will wait for the boss' team sheet," he said. "He has the power to say who plays. I have no idea whether I will play or not. All I must do is work hard over the coming days and wait for the line-up to be decided."

Despite the increased competition for the starting spot between Madrid's posts, Adan stressed that the situation had not affected the relationship between the club's two senior keepers.

"Our relationship is very good," he said. "Apart from being team-mates, we are friends. He has been great with me. Casillas is the captain of Real Madrid and Spain. He brings together all the values of a footballer and a team-mate. He has helped me at all times and given me his support and trust."

Adan, who until this season had not started an important first-team game for Madrid, said he was not worried by media criticism of Mourinho's decision to promote him ahead of Casillas.

"Many people have given their opinions, some good and some bad," he said. "Sometimes opportunists will take advantage of a situation. They ignored my development, coming through the youth teams. But I try to keep away from all of that."
