Fergie: We are not a one-man team

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant that his side are more than just a one-man team relying on Robin van Persie's goals.

Van Persie, 29, is proving to be the most influential signing of the season, having scored 21 goals for United since joining from Arsenal for £24 million last summer.

The displays from the Netherlands international, who has hit ten goals in his last ten games, are leading many to suggest that he will be the reason for the Red Devils getting their hands on their 20th league title come May.

However, Ferguson believes United are not overly reliant on their striker as many of his players are chipping in with the goals.

"I don't go along with the idea we have become a one-man team," he said in the Sun. "There was a time in our history when one man did carry us for a while. Eric Cantona kept us in contention with his goals when a few others were off the boil.

"But things are quite different now. Javier Hernandez has weighed in with 12 goals, while Wayne Rooney is currently on nine. Two defenders, Johnny Evans and Patrice Evra, have chipped in with eight between them so it doesn't stand up to see us as a one-man band overly dependent on Van Persie, brilliant as he has been at both making and taking goals."

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who was desperate to sign Van Persie last summer, said earlier this month that missing out on the former Arsenal man could cost his side the title.

And Ferguson agrees with his rival that the player could be the difference between where the two Manchester clubs finish at the end of the season.

"He is absolutely relishing his new challenge," Ferguson said. "He is the right player, at the right club, at the right time.

"He has a winning mentality but as he points out, it is one that goes right through the squad and one that will hopefully see us push on in both league and the cups and successfully navigate what is a busy and challenging period."
