Montella calms talk on Roma fight

Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Montella played down the ugly scenes which marred Roma's 1-0 defeat of Fiorentina in Wednesday's Coppa Italia quarter-final.

A tight game saw the clash forced into extra-time, but the Giallorossi managed to book their place in the next round thanks to Mattia Destro's 97th-minute decider.

A fight soon broke out as the match came to an end, leading to Juan Cuadrado and Dodo being sent off. The pair continued to clash as they left the field, forcing other players to intervene.

However, Montella insisted after the game that the scenes were simply a result of miscommunication.

"From what I can tell it was a misunderstanding," he said. "A steward slipped and the players thought he had been pushed over."

Having seen his side hit the frame of the goal three times, Montella was left cursing his side's luck, yet he was still full of praise for the performance of his players.

"Did we have bad luck? Do you think?" he said. "We played a great game against a quality side that defended with nine men, as they were packed with midfield players. We created a great deal, but were unlucky and also needed different characteristics in the final third."

Going into the match without Francesco Totti, Pablo Daniel Osvaldo and Erik Lamela, Roma manager Zdenek Zeman also lauded his team as they secured a semi-final tie with Inter.

"Today we were in an emergency situation but we were also decisive," he said. "It's normal we suffered, but the lads sacrificed themselves and we were able to win."

The victory means Roma now face the Nerazzurri three times in ten days, starting with Sunday evening's league meeting.
