Wolves' Ikeme hopes for Nigeria chance

Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has set his sights on an international career and is hoping for a chance with Nigeria.

Ikeme, 26, has been one of the most consistent performers at Molineux this season after getting the opportunity to establish himself as the club's first choice.

He hopes his good form could bring another chance to represent the country where his father was born, six years after first being touted as a possible Super Eagles international.

Ikeme was in then Nigeria coach Bertie Vogts' first provisional squad - a 37-man list that also included Villa's Gabby Agbonlahor, West Brom's Peter Odemwingie and his former Wolves team-mate Seyi Olofinjana - but failed to make the final squad.

Current Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi is looking for a long-term successor to Vincent Enyeama, who, at the age of 30, has 70 caps after 11 years as national No. 1, and Ikeme hopes he is one of those under consideration.

"A call-up by Nigeria is the next step really - that's the next level," he said. "If the call came I would be interested in it, obviously. The Nigeria thing came up a few years ago and so everyone has associated me with Nigeria, but I've not decided on anything.

"It's just a case of waiting and seeing how my career goes, really. I'll just see where I end up, but if Nigeria did call me, I'd seriously consider it. My dad's side of the family are all from Nigeria.

"It seems like a long way off for me at the minute. Obviously with football, you never know. Things can change in an instant."
