Wolfsburg's huge wage bill revealed in report

Wolfsburg playmaker Diego is on a salary of €8.2 million a year, according a report which exposes the huge wage bill of the Bundesliga strugglers.

Despite failing to make an impact in league since winning the title in 2009 and finishing outside the European places three years in a row and in 2011 avoided relegation in their last match of the season, the Wolves remain one of the highest-paying sides in Germany.

In their latest issue, German news weekly Der Spiegel published the payroll. According to the paper, Brazilian midfielder Diego is on €8.2 million salary excluding bonuses. so far this season he has scored four goals and claimed three assists in the league since his loan spell at Atletico Madrid ended in the summer.

Even fringe players like attacker Srdjan Lakic and midfielder Christian Trasch are on close to €€3 million per year each while Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos earns €2 million.

"Certainly, in the past with one or the other player the mark has been overshot," said Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs. "Our task is to do a few things better than they have been done. But we will not let this story spoil our atmosphere."

The Wolves currently have 35 squad members. During the winter transfer period the club have loaned defender Marco Russ to Eintracht Frankfurt and bought Dortmund midfielder Ivan Perisic for a fee believed to be around €8 million.

Allofs told kicker: "We will only do things that are reasonable."

Wolfsburg are currently 15th in the Bundesliga ahead of the league's resumption this weekend, although they are 10 points clear of the relegation places.
