Tassotti expresses admiration for Santon

AC Milan assistant coach Mauro Tassotti has reaffirmed the club’s interest in signing Newcastle United defender Davide Santon.

Davide Santon's form has seen him earn a recall to the Italy squad

Santon, 22, left Inter in 2011 after becoming frustrated at a lack of opportunities but he has slowly rebuilt his reputation at St James’ Park and has recently earned a recall to Cesare Prandelli’s Italy squad.

With the Rossoneri now focusing on young players as they seek to lower costs, Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has identified Santon as a player who would suit the club’s plans, and Tassotti told Sky Italia: “I know that Santon was a promising youngster.

“I don’t think he has lost those qualities. It would be good for Italian football to have him back in the country.”

However, the player himself appears to be happy in England, only last week telling the Evening Chronicle newspaper in Newcastle that he has no desire to move on.

“I am happy at the club,” he told them. “I have had a year and a half here and I really enjoy it. This is really important for a young player. We are a young team here and we are growing together. That will only make us stronger in the long-term.”
