Fernandez leaves Nancy

Nancy have parted ways with coach Jean Fernandez as the Lorraine club head into the second half of the Ligue 1 season bottom of the table.

The rumours that Fernandez would leave the side he joined in the summer of 2011 grew with the team languishing eight points adrift at the halfway stage.

Such talk diminished last week when club president Jacques Rousselot expressed his view that the former Marseille and Auxerre boss, 58, would be in the post until the end of his contract in 2015, but the speculation resurfaced in Thursday's L'Equipe, published just hours before the announcement of Fernandez's departure.

The paper reported Rousselot was due to meet Fernandez's agent, Jean-Pierre Bernes, to discuss an agreement that would see the two parties go their separate ways.

According to L'Equipe, Rousselot now favours the return of Pablo Correa. The Uruguayan, 45, is a former Nancy player and was first-team coach between 2002 and 2011, taking the club out of Ligue 2 to establish them in the top flight, finishing a surprise fourth in 2007-08, and twice winning France Football's Coach of the Year award.

Correa, who left Nancy when his contract expired, has been out of a job since being sacked by fellow Ligue 1 outfit Evian four games into the current top-flight season.
