AC Milan are set to seal a co-ownership agreement for Italy Under-21 international Riccardo Saponara.

Empoli forward Saponara, 21, has been in incredible form in Serie B, and has scored five goals in 13 appearances for the Italy Under-21 side.

Saponara has caught the eye of some of the peninsula’s biggest clubs, but Empoli director of sport Marcello Carli has confirmed that an agreement is in place with Milan.

“It’s true, there is a deal with Milan for half of Saponara’s contract,” he told “He was tracked by many clubs, but the Rossoneri were quick off the blocks. The player will remain with us until the end of the season. That was a decisive factor in negotiations.”

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani had confirmed on Wednesday that Saponara, expected to cost the club around €4 million, was of interest.

“Saponara is certainly a player that fits in with the policy of focusing on youth that Milan are taking,” Galliani told Sky Italia.

However, Galliani dismissed suggestions that Southampton winger Gaston Ramirez was on Milan’s radar.

Uruguay international Ramirez left Bologna to move to the Premier League in the summer, but there had been reports the Rossoneri were ready to take the player back to Italy.

“There’s no need for Ramirez,” Galliani said. “We are fine as we are. If someone leaves then we’ll see but there are no gifts on the horizon for the fans.”
