Villa set sights on Coutinho

Aston Villa have enquired about the availability of Inter Milan midfielder Philippe Coutinho, according to the players agent.

Coutinho enjoyed a successful loan spell at Espanyol last season

The 20-year-old playmaker has made just three league starts this term and has struggled to force his way into coach Andrea Stramaccioni’s plans.

Speaking to the FC Inter news website, the Brazilian's agent said Premier League side Villa had made an approach but was unclear as to his client's future.

“I can confirm Aston Villa made an enquiry,” Cacau Barbosa said. “They want him but with all due respect for the proposal made to Philippe, at this moment there is still nothing concrete to suggest an exit from Inter.”

Coutinho arrived at the San Siro club three years ago from Vasco de Gama and was a key member of the Brazil side which won the South American Under-17 Championship back in 2009.

He has scored three goals in 27 appearances for the Nerazzurri and enjoyed a successful loan spell with Spanish side Espanyol last season, scoring five times in 16 matches for the club.
