Blackburn make move for Appleton

Blackburn Rovers have made an approach for Blackpool manager Michael Appleton, according to a club statement.

Rovers are looking for a new boss after sacking Henning Berg, who spent just 57 days in charge, on December 27 and have placed caretaker duo Gary Bowyer and Terry McPhillips at the helm until the end of January.

However, they are still keen to bring a new man in to help arrest a slide which has seen them slip down the Championship table and they have now made a move to bring in former Portsmouth boss Appleton.

Derek Shaw, managing director of Blackburn, who is believed to be leading the chase for Appleton, said: "I can confirm that we have made an official approach to Blackpool FC about our interest in speaking to Michael Appleton. This is the only candidate we have approached for the manager's job."

The club have turned a corner of late and have won three out of three under Bowyer, who is the fourth man to take charge of the club this season after Steve Kean, caretaker Eric Black and Henning Berg.

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet was reportedly also of interest to Blackburn but is unlikely to leave his post at Brighton, while Sven Goran Eriksson and Peter Taylor were also linked recently.
