Giresse lands Senegal job

Alain Giresse has been appointed the new head coach of Senegal, replacing Joseph Koto, who left the post after the team's failure to qualify for this month's African Nations Cup.

Giresse, 60, will be in charge of Senegal for the next two years, with qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil first on the agenda.

"Giresse is the coach who best meets the criteria defined by the Senegalese Football Federation,'' FSF president Augustin Senghor told the media. "He has a proven track record at the highest level in Africa.''

Giresse has previously coached Gabon and Mali, leading the latter to a third-placed finish at the 2012 African Nations Cup.

Senegal have been in decline in recent years but are well placed to make it through to the final stage of African World Cup qualifying, with the team currently top of a group that also includes Angola, Liberia and Uganda with four points from their two games. Only the group winners will progress.

Senegal have only once before qualified for the World Cup, making the 2002 tournament, when they beat France in the opener and reached the quarter-finals before being beaten by Turkey.
