City confirm Cavani interest

Manchester City assistant coach Angelo Gregucci has confirmed the club's interest in Edinson Cavani, but admits it will be tough to prise him from Napoli.

Edinson Cavani has been repeatedly linked with a move
Napoli are reluctant to part ways with Cavani

Cavani, 25, has been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal and City in recent months, although the English champions now appear to be the only side in the hunt for his signature.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed on Saturday that he had "turned down an offer of €55 million for Cavani" and continued his bid to keep the Uruguayan in Naples by suggesting he would like Cavani to form a partnership with Mario Balotelli.

Despite the lucrative price tag, Gregucci insists City still have Cavani in their sights, although the situation at Napoli is making contract talks difficult.

"I don't know if the club will lay siege to Napoli for Cavani, but every club with a player of the highest level will know they'll be courted by bigger clubs," Gregucci told Radio CRC. "Mancini decides the transfer targets along with the new directors.

"If you ask the clubs who can afford Cavani, for example Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, then I think they'd want Cavani just as Manchester City want him. However, what the player wants is the predominant factor in negotiations and it seems to me that Cavani is happy at Napoli."

De Laurentiis attempted to cool rumours of a Cavani exit by claiming it is foolish for a club to make big changes in the January transfer window.

"City are considering letting Balotelli go so they can move for Cavani," he said. "I would prefer to see Balotelli playing with Cavani here at Napoli.

"Teams tend to hold onto their best players in January. You take a big risk making big investments now. There is still time for us to bring in new faces but we must be cautious. On January 31 you will see what moves Napoli have made."
