Nene shuns Qatar in favour of Brazil return

Wantaway Paris Saint-Germain attacker Nene looks likely to reject a lucrative move to Qatar in favour of staying in Europe or returning to Brazil.

Nene's former club Santos now appear to lead the race for his signature

Despite being the club's top scorer in the last two Ligue 1 seasons, the prolific midfielder, 31, has little future at the Parc des Princes after being frozen out of Carlo Ancelotti's squad and, with just six months left on his contract, is seeking a move.

It appeared he would go to Qatar, where Al Arabi were reportedly ready to offer him a healthy 5 million annual salary, after he had stayed behind to discuss a move when his PSG team-mates returned from their winter training camp in Doha last week.

However, after jetting back to Paris, it seems the Brazilian has now had a change of heart.

"Even if the conditions are very interesting, he doesn't want to bury himself in Qatar," Didier Domat, the player's lawyer, told L'Equipe. "There's no agreement with any club, but we should find a solution in the next two or three days."

While AC Milan and Turkish duo Galatasaray and Besiktas all remain interested, a trans-Atlantic switch to his native country seems the more likely option with Corinthians and, more particularly, Santos - both former clubs - the most ardent suitors.

"There's a good chance he'll come back to Santos," Nene's agent Gilvan Costa is reported as saying on Monday by radio station RMC. "We'll know [on Tuesday]."

Santos sporting director Nei Pandolfo told L'Equipe: "There's nothing new. We're continuing to talk, notably about salary. A decision with regard to this dossier will be taken [on Tuesday]."

French media report Santos could offer the former Espanyol and Monaco player the same salary as he receives in the French capital - a reported €330,000-a-month - while also affording Nene the chance to be closer to his children and his Sao Paulo-based girlfriend.

Though never capped by Brazil at senior level, L'Equipe also suggest Nene would welcome a move which would raise his profile in the eyes of current Selecao coach Luiz Felipe Scolari with a view to earning a place in the 2014 World Cup squad.
