Baines played through ankle problem

Everton defender Leighton Baines played in his side's FA Cup third round win at Cheltenham on Monday despite suffering from an ankle injury, manager David Moyes has said.

Baines, 28, scored his side's second goal against the League Two side at Whaddon Road as they cruised to a 5-1 victory, but was substituted after just over an hour.

Moyes said the left-back had an ankle problem that needed careful monitoring, but revealed that he had been included in the line-up because he wanted to field experienced players in what could have been a tricky tie.

"Leighton has got a bad ankle problem which I need to watch and be careful with," the manager explained. "But I felt we needed him because we have to respect the players at this level. I just felt we needed the people who knew what was going on.

"It was a very professional job. I want to try and progress in the cup - we've got a bit of momentum and we want to try and keep it going."
