Real's Adan rues 'unfair' red card

Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan said his sending off early in Sunday's dramatic 4-3 win over Real Sociedad at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu was unjust and hit out at the media criticism fired his way after Madrid coach Jose Mourinho chose him ahead of regular first choice Iker Casillas in recent games.

Six minutes into Sunday's game, Adan passed the ball straight to Carlos Vela, who advanced into the area only to be tripped by the 'keeper. Referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva appeared to be correct to flash the red card, but Madrid-born Adan believes otherwise.

"It was an unlucky bit of play where the referee blew for a penalty," he said. "The sending-off seems unfair to me.

"This can happen - you can come away having played a perfect match and having made big saves, or you can come away having been sent off. You have to take it on the chin and move on."

Speaking after the game, Mourinho was critical of the Spanish media for showing "a lack of respect" for Adan during their recent criticism of the coach's decision to drop club captain and talisman Casillas.

And Adan, 25, who until recently had not started an important game for the club, said he had been disappointed at what had been said and written by people who did not know him or the work he has put in to get to this stage in his career.

"Many people who do not know me have shown a lack of respect," he added. "There have been two weeks with a lot of things being said. I have stayed on the margin of it all.

"My work has brought me to this point. My team-mates and the boss have supported me. The rest is not important. Some opinions have been disrespectful.

"I am a member of the squad, and I can play. I have been here for 16 years, [and] some people who do not know my progress have given their opinions."

Despite playing most of the game with ten men, Madrid came through, thanks in the main to another two goals for Cristiano Ronaldo. Lifelong blancos fan Adan said he appreciated the effort put in by his team-mates and apologised to Jose Callejon, who was sacrificed so Casillas could enter the field early.

"The game has ended well," he said. "We have returned to winning ways, all that took place was an unlucky piece of play which made it more difficult. I appreciate the effort put in by the team and beg pardon of Callejon as he could not play very long."

Adan said he was confident his side could come through Wednesday's Copa del Rey last 16 second leg against Celta Vigo, despite the Galicians travelling to the Bernabeu with a 2-1 advantage from December's first leg.

"We have an important game on Wednesday with the scoreline against us," he explained.

"We are playing at home with the support of our fans, and I am sure we can come out on top. After the difficult situation that we are in, having not managed to get many wins, every match is important.

"This win is good for our confidence. If we want to fight for the other two competitions, we need to get on a winning streak and go into the other competitions strongly."
